JANUARY NEWSLETTER
2010
We had no meeting in January due to the bad weather, so we have a short newsletter just to keep everyone up to date. The February meeting will be February 4 at 7PM at the First Presbyterian Church on Court Square in Harrisonburg. Refreshments will be provided by Donna Detrich and Ron McCoy.
· Please do your part and support the SVWS by volunteering on the sign up sheets! We will continue to solicit for organizing committees.
· Peg Sheridan has agreed to chair the Workshop Committee! Lourene Bender and Allen Berkshire have agreed to help. We need one more volunteer. Call Peg at (540)886-2177 if you can help. We also need ideas for workshops, and people willing to share their knowledge with the group. Last year, we accomplished a lot with our workshops, and all of us enjoyed and learned from the instruction. Let's keep it up!
· The $30 annual dues are due by the February meeting. That is February 4. If you haven’t paid your dues by then, you will be eliminated from the rolls. Dues should be paid to SVWS c/o Donna Detrich 5677 Niswander Lane, Harrisonburg, VA 22802. If you paid $25 for 2009 and haven’t made up the additional $5, it will be added, making the total due $35.

AUGUST NEWSLETTER
2009
A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT
This past year has been marked with a number of successful activities and accomplishments that have underlined the artistic talent and commitment of our members. Although sales may not have been as brisk as in the past, public recognition of your artistic efforts has persisted. Individual SVWS members had shows at the Smith Center in Staunton, at the Cross Keys Winery, at the Signature 9 Gallery in Roanoke, and at the JMU Arboretum. Some of our members had work accepted into the annual VMRC and VWS shows; others took awards in the VECCA and Waynesboro shows. And then….. 12 of our members have been selected to have their work hang in the new Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Congratulations to all of you!
I would like to give a huge THANK YOU to our officers and committee members. Each of you has done much to keep this organization operating smoothly and effectively this past year. Special thanks must go to the members of the Workshop Committee, who have been creative and energetic in producing a series of wonderful workshops for all of us to enjoy. The recent four-day workshop with Sandi D’Alessandro required tremendous planning, preparation and hard work, and you did a wonderful job producing it. This workshop provided a wonderful experience for all those who attended.
The energy and excitement that I have sensed in you regarding your journey in art this year is more vibrant than I can recall in the past decade that I have been associated with SVWS. It is wonderful to see so many of you breaking new barriers, trying new things, and finding new confidence as you grow as artists.
It has been a privilege and a joy to work with each of you this past year. Hopefully, you have enjoyed this year as much as I have enjoyed being a part of SVWS.
------ Carolyn Yager

"Making Your Watercolors Simple and Fresh” What makes watercolor unique from other media? An important aspect is the freshness that comes from laying down the paint and letting it do what watercolor does! We have all seen the beauty that results. But how do you get that luminous look?
We will experiment with some ways to achieve that in exercises that break the process up. First, we will learn how to plan a painting for success. We will work then on creating paintings with simple shapes that are painted with a sense of playfulness and confidence. Peg will do demonstrations, and will give out copies of the material to use as you paint. She will also give individual help to those who want it.
Sound fun? It will be! And I am sure you will learn something you can use. This class is appropriate for those with some experience in watercolor painting.
A little about Peg: Artist Peg Sheridan has been painting with watercolors for over 20 years. She has taken watercolor classes and workshops from many artists, including Mel Stabin, Tom Lynch, Frank Francese, Fred Graff, and Cheap Joe. She owns an art and art instruction business called "Inspirtations". She has been teaching watercolor painting for about 12 years. She also teaches arts and crafts classes at The Homestead, The Greenbrier, several public schools and art centers. She is currently teaching art full time at Verona Elementary School. Peg also gives private lessons. She had a career as a Wildlife Biologist before she began painting more seriously, and loves to paint landscapes and outdoor subjects.
· We are lining up special guest critiques for some future meetings. Bring your best work for the first scheduled for the June meeting. Ken Szmagaj will be our special guest from the JMU Art Department.
